ESL/EFL Teaching

Overview

As the number of languages spoken in the Triangle grows, so does the need for trained teachers of English. In the new global society, these teachers are also finding rewarding opportunities to teach English abroad. Duke University created this certificate program to meet the needs of our community.

Why earn the Duke Certificate in ESL/EFL Teaching?

  • Work with masters and doctoral-level instructors who have experience teaching in the US and abroad
  • Balance your study with a carefully designed curriculum using theory and hands-on practice
  • Interact with a diverse group of fellow students from many countries, backgrounds and age groups
  • Qualify to teach in community colleges, private schools, overseas, and volunteer settings
  • Keep your day job with our evening and weekend classes

To earn the Duke Certificate in ESL/EFL Teaching, participants will need to complete a set of required courses along with two electives. Twelve classes will be needed to complete the program—some will be multiple-session and some single-day. Classes may be taken individually or concurrently.

While this program will certainly benefit teachers, it is a noncredit program and will not lead to a master’s degree or to state certification, and may not be substituted for such. (Teachers: contact your school district to inquire about gaining teacher renewal credits through this program.)

Those not interested in receiving the Certificate may still register for classes, and are encouraged to do so as a way to meet their particular needs in the field. Fluency in English is still required to enroll in the ESL/EFL teaching courses.
