Capstone Practicum Guidelines
We recommend that you begin preparing for the Capstone before the actual class sessions begin.  Here are the basic requirements for the class with some general guidelines.  More specific instructions will be given to you by your instructor.

  1. DVD- Each student must videotape a lesson that he/she teaches.  The video should be 10-15 minutes long.  If possible, try to show more than one portion of the lesson, i.e., portions of introduction, activity, summary/conclusion, as opposed to a 10-15 minute chunk out of the middle.  See below for more details on media format.
  2. Journal- Reflect on your experiences in a journal format.  Discuss what you did, how it turned out, what did you learn from the experience, and what would you do/not do if you taught the lesson again?
  3. Reflection Paper- Write a formal paper that discusses the methods and techniques that you used in your experiences, what you learned, and how you can improve.

Media Format for the Video Requirement:
You are responsible for any editing or formatting of your video that may be necessary.  It is important to use a format that can be supported by the media available at the time of your class.  Contact your instructor for those details.  A DVD is the most easily accommodated format, although not all DVDs burned on a personal computer will play in any DVD player.  Please have a backup plan as time is of the essence in this course.  You may not get a chance to show your video if it does not work on the day that you are scheduled to present.  Please arrive early on that day to test your video on the equipment being used, or even better, bring your video on the first day to test it on the equipment.
There are two multimedia project labs on campus which are available for you to use if you would like.  You can edit and reformat your video at these labs if you choose.  Please be mindful that this is optional and the responsibility is on you, the student.  You are not required to use this lab and neither the Continuing Studies Office nor your instructor will make these arrangements for you.  The lab staff operates independently from the Continuing Studies Office.
The multimedia labs are located in Old Chemistry 016 (West Campus) and 115 Lilly Library (East Campus).  For hours and availability, you can email the lab staff at mpslab@duke.edu or call 684-8941 (West lab) or 684-5550 (East lab).  More information is also available at:http://www.oit.duke.edu/comp-print/labs/mps/index.php

Capstone Internship

Prerequisities:  ESL Teaching Methods, Four Skills, Classroom Dynamics, and Course Development
In addition to the traditional Capstone Practicum, this year we are offering a Capstone Internship, which will fulfill the classroom and teaching requirements for the Practicum.

Once accepted into the program, the prospective intern will be interviewed by a specially-trained mentor teacher somewhere in the Triangle. After being selected by a mentor, the intern attends a minimum of six ESL class sessions (at least 12 hours) during which the intern observes, participates, and finally, teaches ESL students under the close supervision of the mentor.

Enrollment is limited and competitive. Interested students should apply for a Capstone Internship using the form found at http://www.learnmore.duke.edu/certificates/esl. If you have questions, please contact ewcourses@duke.edu.

Course fee: $350.00
