| Communication is essential in a world where people routinely cross national and cultural boundaries both physically and electronically. This interactive course focuses on specific communication styles across cultures, including non-verbal communication, and is useful for anyone who works - or plays - with people from cultures other than their own. Participants will develop strategies for effective cross-cultural communication. This is a complementary course to "Understanding Cross-Cultural Values." Darla K. Deardorff, Ed.D., is Executive Director of the Association of International Education Administrators at Duke. She has worked in the international education field for over fifteen years and previously held positions at NC State University and the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. She is also an ESL instructor, published author, and teacher trainer with over 15 years of experience. In addition, she has lived and worked in Germany, Japan, and Switzerland. She is on the faculty of the Summer Institute for Intercultural Communication in Portland, OR and she has conducted cross-cultural training/consulting for universities, companies, and nonprofit organizations. She is editor of The Sage Handbook of Intercultural Competence and she has given invited talks at national and international conferences, including recent symposiums in Japan, Mexico, and Germany. | ||
