Cross-Cultural Understanding: Values--Section 2-WAKE COUNTY PROGRAM
(Darla Deardorff)
Class ID# 12686
As the diverse cultures of the world become more interdependent, we have a growing need to understand people whose cultural backgrounds differ from our own. By exploring values, we can increase our understanding of cultural traditions and behaviors and, as a result, improve our ability to communicate cross-culturally. This interactive introduction to cultural value concepts will include participatory exercises. Darla K. Deardorff, Ed.D., is Executive Director of the Association of International Education Administrators at Duke. She has worked in the international education field for over fifteen years and previously held positions at NC State University and the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. She is also an ESL instructor, published author, and teacher trainer with over 15 years of experience. In addition, she has lived and worked in Germany, Japan, and Switzerland. She is on the faculty of the Summer Institute for Intercultural Communication in Portland, OR and she has conducted cross-cultural training/consulting for universities, companies, and nonprofit organizations. She is editor of The Sage Handbook of Intercultural Competence and she has given invited talks at national and international conferences, including recent symposiums in Japan, Mexico, and Germany.
