Each of these courses has been approved by the NC State Bar for 6.5 CPE credits (5.5 general; 1.0 ethics).

Intellectual Property Law
Instructor: L. Taylor Arnold

This course will provide paralegals with an overview of the legal sub-discipline of Intellectual Property. All major areas of IP law will be touched upon, including that pertaining to Patent, Copyright, Trademark, and Trade Secret Protection. Students will complete this seminar with a basic understanding of the contours, powers, and purposes of IP law and how its elements differ from one another. In addition, students will have a preliminary understanding of how Ethics Rules may curtail, guide, and instruct an attorney’s actions. Course format includes lecture and group activities.

Elder Law
Instructor: L. Taylor Arnold

Elder Law is a growing area of legal practice that emphasizes specific issues that effect our aging population. Topics covered include executing and drafting Powers of Attorney and Wills, understanding the basics of Estate Planning, and petitioning for Guardianship. Course format includes lecture and group activities. Special emphasis will be provided regarding an attorney’s ethical responsibilities as they pertain to Elder Law.

Business Organizations
Instructor: L. Taylor Arnold

In this course paralegals will be introduced to the basic types of business entities provided for under law, including Sole Proprietorships, Partnerships, Limited Liability Companies and Corporations. Students will learn the legal and practical benefits and disadvantages of each type of entity, and be exposed to the body of case and statutory law, which guide an attorney’s work in this area. In addition, students will gain a more thorough understanding of the Ethics Rules as they apply to a business-oriented practice. Course format includes lecture and group activities.
