When surveyed, Americans rate our economy as one of their critical concerns. Yet, how many understand the economy? What causes unemployment and what can be done about it? Why are interest rates and inflation so low? Is the dollar ‘strong’ or ‘weak’, and why does it matter? Should we increase free trade in line with globalization or not? Is poverty on the rise and our standard of living on the decline? What about taxes??? Our economy evolved as our country grew and matured into a world power. Join us for a conceptual overview of the essential ideas and relationships at work in an economy by studying its historical development, which can shed light on today’s events. The purpose is to gain a better understanding of the economic world we live in today. No background or knowledge of economics is necessary. We will avoid the use of graphs and equations and rely on basic principals in plain English. Lecture (plus questions).
