2167 - Intergenerational Conversations on Balance: Willpower & Mindfulness
What was Aristotle’s idea of the good life as a balanced life? And, what roles do willpower and mindfulness play in this? This course provides a forum for OLLI members to converse with high school students from Camelot Academy to share and compare stories, struggles, and strategies about making our way and achieving balance in the world. We will ground our conversations on selected readings on willpower and mindfulness. The interests and interplay of the OLLI members and high school students will make the conversations concrete as both share experiences in developing goals, finding a calling, and maintaining balance amid competing pressures. How have we all managed to reframe pleasure and pain? How have we improvised so that our mistakes can become assets? When have closed doors turned out to be new opportunities? What does the world look like to the new generation? Do their hopes, fears and perspectives illuminate our understanding? Facilitated Discussion. The light reading assignments will be selected from The Willpower Instinct: How Self-Control Works, Why It Matters, and What You Can Do to Get More of It by Kelly McGonigal.
