This course will be a consideration of the works of Woody Allen—his films, short stories, one-act plays, and essays in periodicals, as well as his early stand-up comedy routines and interviews he has given on television. It is designed to be rich with audio and visual content. We will listen to Allen reading some of his short stories as well as performing early stand-up comic routines. We will analyze the dramatic structure he brings to these routines and see how they indicate his future filmic narrative gift. For example, we will consider how one of his early routines was the kernel for the film Midnight in Paris. Most classes will be devoted to the complete viewing of films considered his best works. Those classes will begin with an introduction to the film, and questions to be considered, followed by a post-screening discussion shaped by those questions. Lecture (with questions). Viewing Videos.
