Flash fiction is an exciting new art form, playing in the middle ground between storytelling and lyricism. Whether you’re experienced or new, flash will accelerate your development. Work on a variety of voices, styles, and subjects. Wrap your brain more easily around a compact narrative. Build story inventory fast. Sessions include: readings and discussion of masters; discussion of craft (narrative styles, character, voice, others); reading your work aloud; constructive commentary by classmates and instructor (emphasis on what works and how to move toward publication); content generation (take-home and in-class prompts). You don’t grow as a writer without ... writing! Lecture (plus questions). Facilitated Discussion. Writing. Before classes start, read five stories from Flash Fiction International. Make notes on why you think a story works for you—or does not work. Homework other than writing will be light—some very short readings at most. I want you working during the week on stories generated during class!
