This course is a colorful immersion into the uniquely lyrical sound-world of the classical guitar. One of the course highlights will be an 8-segment video that was shot on location in Spain that traces the development of the guitar from the Renaissance to contemporary times. Julian Bream, one of the greatest modern guitarists, will play all of the pieces and narrate as well. We will also see a video of Andres Segovia, again shot in Spain, playing and discussing his life and his pivotal role in the classical guitar's 20th-century revival. In addition to these videos, we will hear and discuss over 50 guitar pieces, including beautiful transcriptions of Bach and Satie, Catalan-based folk music, sonatas by Ponce, Turina, and Castelnuovo-Tedesco, a stunning set of variations by Britten, and lots more from Elizabethan England to Latin America. Lecture (plus questions). Facilitated Discussion. Listening to Music or Other Audio. Viewing Videos.
