Biosciences & Engineering Camp
Academic Life
Through activities including hands-on laboratory experiments and field trips, participants will be introduced to exciting topics in engineering and biology. Engineering topics include mechanics, electrical circuits, communication and energy. Using simple materials and sensors, participants will build a prototype of a prosthetic arm. Bioscience topics include cell biology, anatomy and organ systems, function and structure of DNA, and an introduction to biomaterials. Participants will view cells under a microscope, analyze their own electrocardiograms, and make a silicone prosthetic mold from their own ear, nose, or thumb.
Camp participants will learn about some of the unique research conducted at Duke University through guest speakers, lab demonstrations, activities in the Duke Interactive Sound Studio and the Duke immersive Virtual Environment, and a field trip to the world-renowned Duke Lemur Center.
All participants will present a poster and oral presentation to the camp participants and guests on the evening of Thursday, June 25.
CriteriaThe program is open to students who are in grades 6 - 8 during the 2009-2010 academic year. The curriculum is designed for students who have demonstrated an interest in biology, engineering, and technology. Participants will need to be able to work well independently, as well as in groups.
