Pre-College High School Programs – Employment Opportunities

Certain positions* requiring on-campus residency will arrive prior to the student program dates. Those individuals will have access to campus housing including meals, June 14-July 31, 2022. Some meals outside of this time may not be covered, but staff will be informed in advance in order to plan for meals on their own. Online training is available prior to the session starting and should be completed as indicated for each position. Some in-person training will be provided for the residential programs. On-Site Director (1)

Position Summary:
The On-Site Director is the head administrator responsible for effective summer program operations and reports to and works with the Pre-College Main Office on components including staff training, classroom and instructional matters, student activities, staff performance, and site finances. The On-Site Director supports the student experience by providing assistance to all staff and confers daily with the on-site administrative team and the Main Office to discuss student and site issues.

*The On-Site Director is required to live on site and be accessible as needed for emergencies.

Qualifications:
The successful candidate will possess a bachelor’s degree at minimum – a Master’s degree is preferred. The degree should be in business, K-12 education, higher education, residence life, or a related area. Dean of Residence Life (1)

Position Summary:
The Dean of Residence Life is responsible for overseeing all aspects of Residence Life for Duke Pre-College High School Programs. The duties will be divided primarily into student conduct, residential staff affairs, and clubs. The Dean is also responsible for training and supervising the residential staff. This entails, but is not limited to, conducting regular staff meetings, establishing duty schedules, providing team members with guidance, and leadership.

*The Dean of Residence Life is required to live on site and be accessible as needed for emergencies.

Senior Resident Assistant (4)

Position Summary:
Senior Resident Assistants are responsible both for directly supervising a group of Duke Pre-College program participants and serving as an administrative team member. They are tasked with working closely with a group of Resident Assistants as their mentor and are expected to be their go-to source for information. Senior Resident Assistants are expected to regularly attend administrative meetings and oversee the day-to-day residential life of a group of roughly 10 students to ensure their safety and well-being. Other duties include actively running a club, conducting nightly meetings with students, and leading daily residential activities.

*Senior Resident Assistants directly supervise a group of students, and they are required to live on site and be accessible during program dates.

Qualifications:
The successful candidate will have at least 2 years of experience serving as a residential assistant and a bachelor’s degree preferably in any of the following areas: education, student affairs, counseling, or another related area. The successful candidate will also have experience working with adolescents and youth programming; enjoy spending structured and unstructured time with youth; have effective communication and interpersonal skills; and be able to provide leadership for the staff.

Resident Assistant (25)

Position Summary:
Resident Assistants are responsible for directly overseeing the residence life of a group of approximately 10 Duke Pre-College Program participants. This includes conducting nightly meetings with students, leading daily residential activities, and providing direct support to students. Resident Assistants are also expected to play an active role in the planning and execution of clubs and committees. They must also be able to perform a wide array of duties as needed, such as facilitating driving, medical, and academic needs when they arise.

*Resident Assistants directly supervise a group of students, and they are required to live on site and be accessible during program dates.

Qualifications:
Successful applicants will have completed at least one year of undergraduate college; have experience working with adolescents and youth programming; enjoy spending structured and unstructured time with young people; have effective communication and interpersonal skills; and provide leadership for the students.

Director of Logistics (1)

Position Summary:
The Director of Logistics works closely with the Duke Pre-College administrative staff and On-Site Director to oversee all operational aspects of Duke Pre-College Programs. Directly coordinate arrival days, departure days, and the program’s day-to-day transportation needs with Duke Transportation. Work from the On-Site Office and assist in covering the phones during operational hours, attending to student and staff logistics needs as they arrive, and maintaining all office documentation including vehicle logs, student check-ins, and inventory. Work closely with Conference Services to report and resolve issues relating to food, housing, space, and parking. Support and supervise the work of the Office Assistants.

*The Director of Logistics may opt to live on campus and must be accessible via cell phone during program dates

Qualifications:
The successful candidate will have at least a high school diploma, preferably a bachelor’s degree; significant and successful operational and logistical experience, such as military or police background, that demonstrates administrative knowledge; enjoy spending structured and unstructured time with young people; have effective communication and interpersonal skills; and, are able to provide leadership at the on-site office.

Office Assistant (2)

Position Summary:
Office Assistants work closely with the Director of Logistics to oversee all of the operational aspects of Duke Summer Session’s High School Programs. They will assist to coordinate arrival days, departure days, and the program’s day-to-day transportation and logistical needs. Office

Assistants will operate the On-Site Office. This entails covering the phones during operational hours, attending to student and staff logistics needs as they arise, and maintaining all office documentation including vehicle logs, student check-ins, and inventory. They also work closely with Conference Services to report and resolve issues relating to food, housing, space, and parking.

*It is preferred that Office Assistants live on campus.

Qualifications:

Medical Coordinator (2)

Position Summary:
Medical Coordinators are responsible for overseeing the medical room of the program participants. They are tasked with collecting and holding each student’s medication. The Medical Coordinator will also be responsible for carrying out the program’s protocol in the event of a student illness or medical emergency. Given the important role they serve on site, at least one of the two Medical Coordinators must remain on site during the set office hours of 8:00 am to midnight. Outside of these hours, at least one Medical Coordinator must be on call and accessible by cell phone. The Medical Coordinators will be trained by the site nurse.

 *Medical Coordinators are required to live on site and be accessible as needed for emergencies. 

Qualifications:
The successful candidate will be at least a college senior or hold a bachelor’s degree; possess the ability to work independently; enjoy working with young people; have demonstrable interest in the medical field; and, are able to provide leadership for the students.

  • Document details of student illnesses, ongoing health problems, and health emergencies.
  • Participate in programs’ residential orientations.
  • Pack and inventory all medical supplies at the end of the program.
  • Work in unison with and receive mentorship from the Main Office.
  • Communicate closely with residential and logistics staff to ensure all team members are aware of program’s medical policies.
  • Work with Main Office to develop a plan for responding to medical emergencies as they arise.
  • Ensure that at least one Medical Coordinator is on call at all times.

Psychological Counselor

Position Summary:
The Psychological Counselor is a member of the on-site administrative team. The Psychological Counselor supports the well-being of the staff and students and provides assistance to those who are experiencing social or emotional difficulties. The Psychological Counselor reports all student concerns to the On-Site Director and confers regularly with the on-site administrative team and the main office to discuss student and site issues.

  • Provide individual crisis intervention counseling to referred and self-referred students who are experiencing social, emotional, or academic difficulties; Assist with student and staff in cases of crisis assessment and prevention.
  • Facilitate group conflict resolution sessions for referred and self-referred students.
  • Work in concert with the Academic Coordinator to assist and assess students identified. by instructional staff as experiencing social or behavioral difficulties in the classroom.
  • Work in concert with the Dean of Residence Life to assist and assess students identified by residential staff as experiencing social or behavioral difficulties in the residential setting
  • In consultation with the On-Site Director, the Director of Pre-College programs, and the professional Counselor Mentor, refer students with severe difficulties to appropriate therapeutic agencies as necessary
  • Serve as liaison to parents regarding concerns about students’ emotional and behavioral difficulties such as homesickness, social withdrawal, or aggressive behaviors
  • Collaborate with onsite administrative team facilitate orientation(s)
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein

Academic Coordinator (1)

Position Summary:
Academic Coordinators are responsible for overseeing all academic aspects of Duke Pre-College Programs. This includes leading orientation for students and instructional team members. Once the programs begin, they work closely with Instructors, Teaching Associates, Academic Program Assistants, and Lab Coordinators to ensure that each course’s logistical needs are met and that instructors have pedagogical support. Academic Coordinators are responsible for working directly with staff and students to meet each participant’s academic needs through advising sessions and/or one-on-one tutoring pertaining to college success skills. Academic Coordinators will train and directly supervise an Academic Program Assistant. The position requires being on campus Monday-Friday, as well as support during weekend events, such as arrival and departure days.

Position Summary:
Academic Program Assistants work closely with Academic Coordinators to ensure that all academic aspects of Duke Pre-College Programs are running smoothly. They may facilitate some student group activities and oversee supplies and inventory. Position Summary:
Instructors are content experts who are responsible for overseeing teaching and learning engagements for Pre-College Program participants, Monday-Friday. Students are in class from 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. during residential sessions and 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. during the online session, and this position requires preparation before and after class. Instructors are responsible for preparing and teaching academically engaging courses and managing a learning environment where participants can thrive personally and academically. Instructors will have the support of the Academic Coordinator, Academic Program Assistant, and Teaching Associates. Instructors are expected to be present at instructional staff training and work closely with teaching associates before the start of the course.

Teaching Associate

Position Summary:
Teaching Associates work closely with Instructors to bring Pre-College classes to life. While their roles vary from class to class, they are often tasked with running certain class activities, facilitating small group discussions, leading small groups during excursions, and supervising students during transitions throughout the day. Although Duke Pre-College Program participants are required to meet language proficiency guidelines, Teaching Associates who speak different languages are expected to assist international participants in fully comprehending the material when necessary. Students will be from grades 9-11 and may have varying prerequisite knowledge and aptitude. TAs assist students to ensure all students are academically challenged everyday while also receiving academic support.

Qualifications:
