This course is a great opportunity to learn the basics of painting with watercolors for those who have not done this before but always wanted to try it. Students will learn about materials, glazing, painting wet-in-wet, color mixing, controlling edges, negative painting, saving whites, masking, producing various textures, composition, values, and more.   Active Participation

Brushes: Creative Mark's Beste,  rounds size 8 & 14, a "One Stroke" flat brush (3/4" or 1" size) and a medium size rigger brush.  Paper: Arches 140# Cold Press paper, at least 10" X 14" -- other types/ brands do not work.  Paints: Winsor & Newton's Cotman watercolors: Cobalt Blue, Lemon Yellow, Permanent Rose, Indigo, Burnt Sienna, Van Dyke Brown, Violet, Orange & Hooker's Green. A watercolor palette with paint wells, a mixing area & a lid is best.  Recommended: Creative Mark's 12" x 16" palette with lid or similar type.  These materials can be purchased at Jerry's Artarama in Raleigh or online at www.jerrysartarama.com.  ACMoore and Michael's in Durham carry some of these materials.  Total cost of these items is about $150. 
Additional materials:  2 plastic water containers ( e.g. cottage cheese containers), Viva paper towels (the best brand), roll of toilet paper (for blotting), masking tape. household sponge, small spray bottle, #2 pencil, kneadable eraser, drawing paper,  masking fluid (optional) & small bar of soap (for masking fluid) scissors, 12" ruler.

Students will be expected to do homework each week.  Communication between Becky Raye and the students is via e-mail on a regular basis.  Having the capacity to open e-mail attachments and to print pictures or documents is required.

This is the first course in a year-long series of three courses.  This course is for beginners.  In the winter session I offer "More Watercolor" as the intermediate level course.  In the spring session I offer a course for advanced watercolor painters.
