Course Description

This discussion-based class will investigate European and American art featuring women from ancient times to the nineteenth  century, considering woman as subject and woman as artist. We will discuss interdisciplinary trends of feminist scholarship in art history and consider the issue of differences between art made by women and men. We will examine the impact of the prevailing institutional structures of the art world and attitudes towards women artists. We will evaluate the various strategies employed by successful women artists over the centuries. And, we will look at wonderful art created by women you may not know, but should. (ps.
