As society continues to age, health care has not only become a medical issue, but a legal issue as well. Protection of rights in the health care field makes this an important and relatively new area of law. This course provides the student with studies in health care delivery, state and federal roles in health care, the physician/patient relationship, physicians and health care providers, Medicare, fraud and abuse, compliance programs, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, electronic health records, the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act, clinical research, and ethics in health care.
This certificate is comprised of three required courses and one elective:
- Health Care Law
- Torts & Personal Injury Law
- Administrative Law

Graduates of the Duke Paralegal Certificate Program and Duke Paralegal Online Certificate Program are eligible to receive a $800 discount on each specialist certificate course. Tuition must be paid in full before a student can start the program. Books are purchased separately and range between $45 and $160 per book. When registration is complete, the student will receive an email containing a username and password to the program's website, information on purchasing textbooks, and instructor and support contact information.
A degree or certificate in paralegal studies is required OR a bachelor's or associate's degree in any field AND a minimum of three years work experience as a paralegal under the direct supervision of an attorney.
