0693 - Intellectual Property Law - Paralegal Specialist Certificate
Course Description
One of the newest areas of legal practice, “IP” law is sure to grow in terms of job opportunities over the next several years. This course will include foundations of trademark law, the trademark registration process, post-registration issues, infringement, foundations of copyright law, copyright registration, copyright infringement, international copyright law, foundations of patent law, patent transfers, patent infringement, unfair competition, and trade secrets laws.
This certificate is comprised of three required courses and one elective:
- Intellectual Property Law
- Business Law
- Administrative Law
- Electives (please choose one):
- E-Discovery
- Legal Ethics
- Laws of Evidence; OR
- Advanced Legal Research

Graduates of the Duke Paralegal Certificate Program and Duke Paralegal Online Certificate Program are eligible to receive a $800 discount on each specialist certificate course. Tuition must be paid in full before a student can start the program. Books are purchased separately and range between $45 and $160 per book. When registration is complete, the student will receive an email containing a username and password to the program's website, information on purchasing textbooks, and instructor and support contact information.
Prerequisites
A degree or certificate in paralegal studies is required OR a bachelor's or associate's degree in any field AND a minimum of three years work experience as a paralegal under the direct supervision of an attorney.
