Course Description

Land ownership is the dream of most Americans, and if not properly represented an individual may see that dream become a nightmare. This course includes, among other areas of study, ethics in real property practice, basic principles, categories of real property, legal descriptions of real property, brokers, contracts, deeds, liens, title insurance, closing issues, residential and commercial leases, eviction, and mortgage foreclosures.

This certificate is comprised of 3 required courses, and one Elective:

  1. Real Estate Law
  2. Administrative Law
  3. Federal Tax Law
  4. Elective (please choose one):
    1. E-Discovery
    2. Legal Ethics
    3. Laws of Evidence
    4. Advanced Legal Research

Notes

Graduates of the Duke Paralegal Certificate Program and Duke Paralegal Online Certificate Program are eligible to receive a $800 discount on each specialist certificate course. To take advantage of this discount, please register by calling the Duke Continuing Studies Registration Office at 1-866-338-3853.

Tuition must be paid in full before a student can start the program. Books are purchased separately and range between $45 and $160 per book. When registration is complete, the student will receive an email containing a username and password to the program's website, information on purchasing textbooks, and instructor and support contact information.

Prerequisites

A degree or certificate in paralegal studies is required OR a bachelor's or associate's degree in any field AND a minimum of three years work experience as a paralegal under the direct supervision of an attorney.
