2725 - Truth, Opinion and Lies: Plato to your iPhone
Does truth really matter? If so, why? What about lies — how should we understand them? And when you have an opinion, where does it come from — and what’s it worth? This course aims (1) to acquaint OLLI participants with some major ideas and examples -— drawn from philosophical, historical, journalistic/media and fictional sources — concerning these questions, and (2) to evolve guidelines toward distinguishing among them on a personally and socially meaningful basis, with an underlying view toward more effective citizenship in the current United States and global context.
