Course Description

The appreciation of “art” covers a vast range of possible perspectives.  For this course, the instructor has chosen five differing subjects to explore, each representing a specific focus within the world of art, touching on the aesthetic and/or scientific:  1) Why There Is No Color—This will cover the physics of light, the physiology of vision, and the illusion we “see” about us;  2) Mind to the Ceiling—A look at Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel and its significance beyond the images themselves;  3) Catching Light—The influence of visual arts in the evolution of photography; 4) Making the Sale—A brief look at how art has been used as a tool of advertising persuasion;  and 5) A History of Art at War—A look at the role of visual arts in war, including how this can be woven into the science of combat. Lecture (plus Questions)
