Course Description

In this seminar/discussion course, participants will read Michael Mandelbaum's The Rise and Fall of Peace on Earth (2019) and examine why the early years of the post-Cold War world witnessed the unprecedented rise of democratic governments. Then they will investigate how Russia, China, and Iran have attempted to undermine this relatively peaceful world order with provocative policies aimed at overturning the prevailing political arrangements in Eurasia, East Asia, and the Middle East. Finally, the group will consider whether it is possible to re-create the world of the "democratic peace" in an era of aggressive nationalism. Students are expected to read approximately twenty-five pages each week and to actively participate in class. Facilitated Discussion
