Course Description

You may already know about Klimt's tumultuous affairs. Or perhaps you've heard through the art history grapevine that Caravaggio was a murderer. But are those stories true, or are they just tabloid rumors? In this course, we'll cover everything from Ruskin's repulsive reaction on his wedding night to the horrific rape trial of Artemisia Gentileschi and the obsessive art theft of Hermann Goring. We'll delve into the lusty romps of Peggy Guggenheim and sift through the political intrigues of Gericault while exploring contemporary artistic feuds like that of Anish Kapoor to find that, oftentimes, fact is stranger than fiction, especially in the art world. Students will be encouraged to submit their favorite rumors prior to the first class so that we can fully exhaust all the most risqué subjects (tastefully and tactfully, of course). Lecture (plus Questions)Active Participation
