Course Description

Creating a specific color from scratch can be one of the biggest challenges and rewards of making art. This hands-on course will equip students with the foundational skills to see and replicate the colors they encounter in art and in the world by studying and practicing mixing paints. At the end of the course, students will be able to use color as a tool in work they create as well as experience a deepened appreciation in their encounters with work made by others. Required supplies/fee: Estimated cost of items Students need to supply is $90. Students will need acrylic paints, brushes, a palette, palette knife, and paper. Students may bring materials they already own. Materials: Acrylic paint, 2 oz size by Golden, Winsor-Newton, Liquitex or Utrecht*. Colors: Hansa Yellow Light, Cadmium Yellow Light, Quinacridone Red, Cadmium Red Light, Pthalo Blue Green Shade, Ultramarine Blue, Titanium White. Brushes: two brushes, brite shape, bristle recommended but sable, taklon, or squirrel acceptable. One brush ~3/8" at ferrule (handle) size range ~4-8 and one brush 5/8" size range ~ 8-12. Palette knife: metal, trowel shape (narrow at point) about 2" long. For gray scale, graphite or compressed charcoal stick. Paper: at least 10 sheets 11" x 17", at least 100 lb weight, bright white, cold press/smooth. Bristol board and watercolor paper acceptable. Also needed: straight edge, pencil, eraser, water container and at least 1 cotton rag (cleanup).
