Course Description

A reasoned investigation into the nature of art and the nature of aesthetics. How do the two interrelate? Is there an objective basis for either one, or do they reside in our subjective experiences? What role do our emotions play? Just what is it to be a work of art? What about bad art and “meh” art? What is it to be aesthetically beautiful? When beauty is what moves us to appreciate certain works of art, are they superior to other works? If beauty makes us value things we like, can ugliness move us to value things we dislike? This course will search out answers to these and associated questions. | Lecture (plus questions); Facilitated discussion
