Residential Director

Position Summary:

The Residential Director is the head administrator responsible for effective summer program operations and reports to and works with the Pre-College Main Office on components including staff training, classroom and instructional matters, student activities, staff performance, and site finances. The On-Site Director supports the student experience by providing assistance to all staff and confers daily with the on-site administrative team and the Main Office to discuss student and site issues.

*The Residential Director is required to live on site and be accessible as needed for emergencies.   

 

Qualifications:

The successful candidate will possess a bachelor’s degree at minimum – a Master’s degree is preferred. The degree should be in business, K-12 education, higher education, residence life, or a related area. The successful candidate will have significant administrative and logistical knowledge that demonstrates successful residential, operational, academic, and analytical experience; enjoy spending structured and unstructured time with young people; have effective communication and interpersonal skills; and, will be able to provide leadership for the staff and foster a positive working environment.

 

General Expectations:

  • Maintain the highest level of attention to risk management and safety for staff and students.
  • Understand and adhere to FERPA, HIPPA, TITLE IX, and confidentiality guidelines.
  • Possess cultural sensitivity awareness and a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.
  • Work with the Duke Pre-College administrative staff to train and mentor the Residential staff, Assistants, and Instructional staff.
  • Demonstrate a strong understanding of all student and staff policies, having reviewed and learned these prior to the start of the program.
  • Live on campus during Duke Pre-College summer program dates and maintain high visibility and availability for the duration of the program for risk management purposes.
  • Lead, guide, and support students and staff and set the tone of the site through a consistent, positive interpersonal style while performing job duties.
  • Remain committed to working as a team player and have the ability to work independently when appropriate.
  • Uphold all Duke University policies as applied to the Duke Pre-College Summer Programs.

 

Specific Expectations:

  • Possess an understanding and appreciation for effective online and residential adolescent programming.
  • Work in unison with Program Director to mentor and evaluate the senior administrative staff including the On-Site Academic Coordinator (AC), Assistant Residential Director, and the Logistics Coordinator.
  • Work with the Duke Pre-College administrative staff to train and mentor all Residential staff, Assistants and Instructional staff.
  • Serve as a liaison with Duke Conference Services and oversee interactions with outside vendors as well as day-to-day fiscal management of Duke Pre-College summer programs.
  • Oversee human resource issues, training, mentorship, evaluation, and conflict resolution for staff.
  • Successfully lead students and staff by means of inspiration, support, ownership, and compassionate guidance in all situations.
  • Identify and address all students and staff performance issues in collaboration with Program Director.
  • Work closely with the residential, logistics, and academic teams to ensure communications across departments is clear and consistent.
  • Communicate with summer program and administrative staff prior to program dates and conduct and attend regular staff and administrative meetings.
  • Perform additional duties as deemed necessary by Duke Pre-College Program Director.
  • Plan and schedule staff members to receive equipment delivery from STORR, sort items, reference the inventory list and sort items into dorms based on 6-8th or 9th-11th grade materials
  • Developed detailed directions for arrival and departure days. (ie. schedules for students riding airport shuttles, who will greet students at the airport, who is stationed on East Campus to greet all students, staff who will hand out keys and transport luggage, among others)

 

Additional Requirements:

  • Should driving be required, provide documentation of a clean driving record from the last three years and be comfortable driving Duke University vehicles.
  • Agree not to consume alcoholic beverages on Duke University’s campus, nor be on campus in an inebriated state.
  • Provide a written report two weeks after the program to the director outlining program highlights and success as well as suggestions for future improvement and growth.
  • Successfully pass the Duke University criminal background check and online training for working with minors.
  • Agree to adhere to all duties before, during, and after the program as outlined in the staff materials.
  • Enforce all minors and staff handbook policy set by Duke.

Compensation:

Salary term: June 10  – July 27, 2024

A salary of $7,100 plus meals, housing, and activities fees.
