About EngageU
Alongside university partners, the EngageU team supports summer pre-college and middle school programming through academic development and residential life services. We are seeking engaging individuals with strong leadership skills, past residential life and/or experience with youth to support middle and high school students during their summer experience. EngageU is powered by the National Student Leadership Conference.
The Role
The Resident Assistant (RA) will be responsible for mentoring and supervising middle and high school students participating in a summer residential academic program at Duke University. RAs arrive on-site before student arrival to participate in a mandatory week long orientation & training. This training runs from 9:00 AM - 6:00 PM daily. RAs will work each day from 3:00 PM - 10:00 PM facilitating activities and supervising students, and alternate mornings to assist with student drop-off and set-up tasks. RAs are expected to live in the dorms and assist students if needed.
Responsibilities
- Lead small group discussions and facilitate, set-up and break-down activities
- Facilitate interactions between students and create a positive living/learning environment
- Assist administrative staff and the academic team with program components
- Greet students each morning and facilitate sign-out each evening
- Serve as a chaperone during off-campus trips
- Support the wellness team when asked
- Reside in the dormitory on the same floors as students, serving as a Residential Assistant
Qualifications
- RAs are generally current college sophomores – seniors. Current freshmen are generally considered for our Residential Support team.
- EngageU has a primary focus on youth development. Applicants should have experience mentoring and chaperoning youth.
- Our programs include RA-led sessions that require engaging public speakers and the ability to facilitate a group activity.
Compensation & Dates
EngageU/Duke pays for room & board, meals during sessions (most of which are eaten in the dining hall on campus), and transportation to and from the program. Summer 2025 will run June 16 - July 26, for a total of five weeks. Applicants will be offered four or five weeks. RAs will be paid $1600 per two-week session and/or $800 per one week session.
