Tackling Bias and Creating Inclusion

Actively tackling bias in the workplace helps build better organizations … and better people. If you want to unleash the true potential of your workforce, it’s important to create an environment in which diverse perspectives, contributions, and talents can flourish – where everyone feels valued and visible.

Participants will discover in this course how they can co-create a culture where diversity and inclusion are unleashed to foster greater innovation, solutions, and belonging.

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the connection between the brain’s hard wiring and cognitive biases
  • Discover specific unconscious biases that exist for them personally
  • Articulate the longitudinal impact of bias on members of non-dominant groups
  • Identify concrete actions they can take to counteract biases and stereotypes
  • Leverage key vital behaviors that reflect inclusivity
  • Play an active role in creating and sustaining an inclusive organizational culture

The first step in creating an inclusive culture is surfacing and dismantling unconscious belief structures that skew decision-making and cloud objectivity. Mitigating bias is not a one-and-done event; it is a journey. Accordingly, this highly interactive course is paced and structured to help you recognize bias and interrupt it.

Because unbiasing is about accountability instead of blame, participants are invited to move through this learning experience with curiosity and compassion. They will explore the impact of bias and stereotyping through a variety of activities, including large group and team exercises, individual reflection, videos, scenario practice and role play. Participants will also learn and practice inclusive behaviors, discovering how they can co-create a culture where diversity and inclusion are unleashed to foster greater innovation, solutions, and belonging. Note, there is a one (1) hour self-paced exercise required outside the six hours of live instruction.

Session 1: Exploring Bias and Belonging (2 hours)

Session Goal: To enable you to recognize and mitigate the impact of unconscious bias in the workplace

Learning Objectives:
  • Define key Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DE&I) terminology.
  • Connect DE&I concepts to values and business benefits.
  • Describe various “costs” of exclusion.
  • Recognize the connection between the brain’s hard-wiring and cognitive biases.
  • Articulate the impact of bias on non-dominant groups.
  • List examples of common cognitive biases in the workplace.
  • Identify ways to mitigate unconscious bias.

Session 2: Dimensions of Diversity (2 hours)

Session Goal: To broaden your perspective around your and others’ experiences of dimensions of diversity, power, and privilege

Learning Objectives:
  • Articulate the connection between unconscious bias and stereotypes.
  • Explain the dangers of stereotypes in the workplace.
  • Recognize how culture and media reinforce unconscious stereotypes.
  • Identify dimensions of diversity that have shaped your professional opportunities and choices.
  • Explain the importance of acknowledging and discussing our differences.
  • Make a personal connection between diversity factors and your relationship to various types of privilege.

Session 3: Building a Culture of Inclusion (2 hours)

Session Goal: To help you build ally skills and create and sustain a culture of inclusion

Learning Objectives:
  • Leverage the power and privilege wheel to gain intra- and inter-personal insight.
  • Articulate what it means to act as an ally to a marginalized group.
  • Explain how bystander behavior contributes to bias and exclusion.
  • Identify concrete actions that allies can take to address bias and discrimination.
  • Describe inclusive behaviors.
  • Brainstorm inclusive actions an ally could take in real-life scenarios.
Topics covered include:
  • Revisiting Power and Privilege
  • DE&I Aspirations and Goals
  • Moving from Bystander to Ally
  • Inclusive Behaviors
  • Building Inclusion: Scenarios


  • Fluency in English (including reading and writing)
  • Understanding that curriculum is based upon US laws and/or practices
  • Registration complete
  • Tuition paid in full prior to program start
  • Computer literacy and comfortable with “live” (virtual) online learning via Zoom platform
  • Have an email account and regular access to the internet and a computer, with both microphone and camera abilities. Students must have the means to both hear and speak to the instructor and other students during class time.

Admission is discretionary. CEG/Duke University Management Training programs require students be at least 18 years of age and meet minimum suitability standards. Students are not matriculated Duke University students and university student privileges do not apply to CEG/Duke University Management Training programs students. CEG/Duke University Management Training programs reserve the exclusive right, at their sole and absolute discretion, to withhold registration or require withdrawal from the program of any student or applicant.

Certificate requirements

After completing the certificate program, fulfilling the course requirements and passing any post-course exams, participants receive a certificate of completion jointly issued by CEG/Duke University Management Training Programs.

Cancellation Policy

Notice of cancellation, (which occurs prior to the beginning of a program or course) and withdrawal, (which occurs after the beginning of a program or course) should be conveyed via email to the organization which processed the registration initially: Corporate Education Group (CEG) or Duke Continuing Studies (DCS). This notification email should include the first and last name used to register for the course/program, the title of the course/program, start date and the reason for cancelling or withdrawing.

Refunds, if applicable, are issued by the organization which originally processed the registration, paid only to the recipient who originally purchased the course/program and credited to the original source of payment.

For Instructor-led classroom-based or Virtual programs:

Refunds for cancellations or withdrawals from instructor-led classroom-based or virtual programs will be made to REGISTRANT on a per course basis in accordance with the following refund schedule:

  • If REGISTRANT cancels more than 14 calendar days prior to the Start Date, all monies will be refunded.
  • If REGISTRANT cancels between 14 and 7 calendar days prior to the Start Date, 25% of the course cost will be retained.
  • If REGISTRANT cancels less than 7 calendar days prior to the Start Date, an amount equal to 50% of the course cost will be retained.
  • If REGISTRANT withdraws after their Start Date, but prior to the midpoint of the program’s scheduled hours, an amount equal to 75% of the course cost will be retained.
  • If REGISTRANT withdraws at or after the midpoint of the program’s scheduled hours, 100% of the course cost will be retained.

Notwithstanding the foregoing refund schedules, if REGISTRANT cancels this Registration Agreement within three (3) business days of its execution, exclusive of Saturday, Sunday, and holidays, he or she will receive a full refund of all monies paid, provided such cancellation occurs prior to the Start Date. Refunds will be made within 30 days after it is determined that a registrant has cancelled or withdrawn.

If REGISTRANT cancels or withdraws as a result of being called into active duty in a military service of the United States, he or she will receive a refund of any tuition and refundable fees for the course in which REGISTRANT is enrolled at the time of withdrawal. No refund will be given for any course REGISTRANT has completed.

Cancellation of a course/program by either CEG or DCS entitles the student to a full refund.
