Position Summary:
Lead Resident Assistants are primarily responsible for directly overseeing the residential life of a group of approximately 10 Duke Pre-College Program participants. This includes conducting nightly meetings with students, leading daily residential activities, and providing direct support to students.  Lead Resident Assistants are also expected to play an active role in the planning and execution of clubs and committees. They must also be able to perform a wide array of duties as needed, such as facilitating driving, medical, and academic needs when they arise. Lead Resident Assistants are required to live on site and be accessible during program dates. They must maintain high visibility during all duty times. Secondarily, this position will also support the Commuter Program Coordinator with day-to-day operations as assigned by the Residential Life Coordinator, Residential Director and other PK-20 permanent administrative staff.  

Qualifications: 
Successful applicants will have completed at least one year of undergraduate education at a college or university; have experience working with adolescents and youth programming; enjoy spending structured and unstructured time with young people; have effective communication and interpersonal skills; and provide leadership for the students. 

Expectations:  

  • Live on campus during Duke Pre-College summer program dates and maintain high visibility and availability for the duration of the program.
  • Conduct self in an exemplary manner at all times through leadership, honesty, integrity, and maintain a high standard of behavior.
  • Demonstrate excellent time management and organizational skills.
  • Effectively manage multiple assignments simultaneously.
  • Maintain the highest level of attention to risk management and safety for staff and students.
  • Understand and adhere to FERPA, HIPPA, TITLE IX, and confidentiality guidelines.  
  • Possess cultural sensitivity awareness and a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.
  • Work with the Duke Pre-College administrative team to train and mentor Residential staff.    
  • Lead, guide, and support students and staff and set the tone of the site through a consistent, positive interpersonal style while performing job duties.  
  • Remain committed to working as a team player and have the ability to work independently when appropriate. 
  • Work in unison with and receive mentorship from the Residence Life Coordinator and Commuter Program Coordinator.  
  • Address student and staff performance issues with PK-20 Permanent Staff, Residence Life Coordinator and Commuter Program Coordinator. 
  • Coordinate residential logistics and run residential activities alongside other members of the residential team. 
  • Participate in committees and clubs to collaboratively develop various components of the programs. 
  • Communicate with Residence Life Coordinator and Commuter Program Coordinator prior to the program. 
  • Regularly attend staff meetings. 
  • Work with Residence Life Coordinator and Commuter Program Coordinator to establish duty schedules and uphold residential guidelines. 
  • Work closely with the residential, logistics, and academic teams to ensure communications across departments is clear and consistent. 
  • With work administrative staff and Residential Life Coordinator to receive equipment delivery, process the inventory, and store all equipment in designated locations. 
  • Meet daily with Residential Life Coordinator and Commuter Program Coordinator and submit reports and other information as requested. 
  • Facilitate check-out and departure processes in conjunction with other residential staff
  • Clean out all residential halls and rooms at the end of each session to prepare for next arrival day.
  • Reset furniture in all common room space after each session along with other residential staff.
  • Maintain line of sight post while students transition from breakfast to class, class to lunch, and from class to dinner and to after class and evening or weekend activities. 
  • Assist with evening events as needed. 
  • Maintain minor ratio at all times.
  • Support with daily arrival and departure of commuting participants and ensure that only approved parents or guardians are transporting students each day.
  • Uphold all Duke University policies as applied to the Duke Pre-College Summer Programs.  
  • Ability to work with various office equipment including, but not limited to: office phones, cell phones, computers, recreational equipment, photo copiers, etc.
  • Perform additional duties as deemed necessary by Duke Pre-College Program Director.
  • Duke University has a zero-tolerance for inappropriate behavior of any kind, including child sex abuse or misconduct.
  • Adults interacting with minors are mandated reporters per the state of North Carolina.

Additional Requirements: 

  • Agree to all duties before, during, and after the program as outlined in the staff materials.
  • Abide by Duke policies that the unauthorized use, possession, storage, manufacture, distribution and sale of alcohol, controlled substances, and illegal drugs is prohibited on Duke’s premises or during any business conducted in Duke-supplied vehicles during program dates.
  • Recognize that Duke is a Smoke-Free campus and prohibits the use of all tobacco-based products, including but not limited to cigarettes, cigars, cigarillos, hookahs, chewing tobacco, snuff, and electronic smoking devices such as e-cigarettes, vaping products, and IQOS.
  • Provide a written report after the program to the director outlining program highlights and success as well as suggestions for future improvement and growth.  
  • Successfully pass the Duke University criminal background check, online training for working with minors, and any other training required by the program.   
  • Ability to move, or push objects by using hands and arms to install or position materials up to 40 lbs.
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, kneel, crouch, and crawl for prolonged periods of time to perform general operations.
  • Maintain constant contact with others by interacting with staff and students and within residential living situations and campus facilities.
  • Ability to walk daily throughout the assigned campus while supervising students to/from all destinations.
  • This position is a full-time commitment, and having another job or taking a class during the contracted period is prohibited. 

Compensation: 

Salary term: June 10-July 27, 2024 
Compensation: $4,550 plus meals, housing, and activities fees.
